An arm lift in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is used to reduce loose, hanging skin and unwanted fat along the upper arms for a firmer, more contoured appearance. At Rehoboth Plastic, Derm Center, & Medispa, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Chang performs arm lift surgery for patients from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Dewey Beach, Philadelphia, and the surrounding areas.
What is Brachioplasty?
Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the upper arms by removing excess skin, tightening supportive tissue, and reducing unwanted fat deposits when needed. It is often chosen by patients who have developed sagging or drooping upper arms, or “bat wings,” due to aging, genetics, or significant weight changes. Liposuction may also be incorporated when excess fat is contributing to fullness in the area.
Good Candidates For Arm Lift Surgery
The best candidates for an arm lift are adults with significant skin laxity of the upper arms who are in good overall health and do not smoke. Patients should be at or within 30% of their ideal weight, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.
Candidates should also have a thorough understanding of the available treatment options, the details of the procedure, the recovery process, and their expected results. Because an arm lift requires a permanent incision, patients should be comfortable accepting a visible scar in exchange for improved arm contour. However, most patients’ scars significantly fade over time with proper aftercare.
Your Arm Lift Consultation
During your initial consultation, Dr. Chang will discuss your concerns about excess skin and tissue in the upper arms while reviewing your medical history, medications, allergies, previous surgeries, and overall health. He will examine your upper arms to evaluate skin laxity, excess fat, and symmetry, and clinical photographs may be taken to assist with treatment planning.
Dr. Chang will explain all available options for upper arm rejuvenation, including the non-surgical treatments Exilis Ultra™, Morpheus8®, and BodyTite, as well as surgical arm lift procedures. While those technologies may improve mild to moderate skin laxity with little downtime, they cannot achieve the same degree of tightening as surgery. Based on your anatomy and goals, Dr. Chang will recommend the most appropriate treatment plan and review the procedure, recovery, expected results, and potential risks.
The Arm Lift Procedure
The brachioplasty procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery at Rehoboth Plastic, Derm Center, & Medispa under general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours. Before your procedure begins, Dr. Chang carefully places surgical markings on your upper arms with meticulous attention to incision placement and the eventual scar location. He also outlines specific areas that may benefit from liposuction to enhance your overall arm contour.
Dr. Chang then makes the incisions along the inner or back portion of the upper arm, typically extending from the underarm to the elbow. Through these incisions, excess skin is removed, underlying tissue is tightened and reshaped, and unwanted fat deposits are addressed to create a smoother, more toned appearance.
Arm Lift Recovery Process
Following surgery, dressings and compression garments will be applied to minimize swelling and support the healing tissues. If surgical drains are used, they are typically removed within five to seven days. Patients are generally advised to continue wearing the compression garments for approximately six weeks.
Most patients can resume light daily activities, including driving and lifting objects under 10 pounds, within two to three weeks. More strenuous exercise and unrestricted lifting should be avoided until about six weeks after surgery or until cleared by Dr. Chang. Once the incisions have adequately healed, scar management may begin, typically around three weeks after the procedure.
